Tinkering with your swing: What can a leadership coach do for you?
Posted On May 17, 2018
Do you need a leadership consultant? Does anyone? Some businesses must find their services useful – there are millions of them across the country.
But how do you know if you need one? What can they do for your business? And how do you know which one to turn to for help?
In this week’s episode of “What’s Working with Cam Marston,”I pose these questions to Hal Adler of Leadership Landing, who has worked with senior leadership teams of some of the most successful companies in the world.
What are those companies seeking when they hire a consultant? These are proven businesspeople and experienced leaders – if they weren’t, they wouldn’t have risen to the level where they are. But even the best professional golfers and tennis players in the world use coaches to keep their games sharp. Even Serena Williams has a coach. Even Jordan Spieth has someone to work on his swing.
Sometimes, it helps to enlist the help of someone who can bring an outside perspective – a coach who can analyze your tee shots or your backhand, a consultant who can analyze your business and your leadership effectiveness from outside your corporate culture.
“People are looking for ways to unlock the best of themselves so they can unlock the best of others,” Adler says. “That’s what we do as coaches.”
A good leadership consultant does it mostly by listening, Adler says — the most important skill for a leadership coach. But he must act on what he hears by asking questions that bring leaders to look at things in ways they hadn’t thought of before, and by proposing ways to put the results into action.
OK, so maybe that sounds helpful to you. But how do you know which of these millions of consultants to hire? Adler has a somewhat surprising answer, along with a to-do list of things to look for in order to find the right fit.
