I wasn’t aware until this morning after reading the article below that the audience for this conference last week managed on average $1 billion in retirement funds for their clients. Wow. I would have been much more nervous. But, as always, extraordinarily nice people. http://www.riabiz.com/a/4968982889103360/td-ameritrade-hosts-a-posh-billion-dollar-club-summit-at-a-seaside-ritz-carlton#.U55QxoAoqMw.twitter

Millennials march to a different beat, or is it different beats?

Posted On June 10, 2014

In a recent meeting, a high-level leader lamented the conundrum of managing the younger members of his team: “They want everything done so differently.” Same complaint, different person. But then he continued…“Each one of them wants to be dealt with differently. So I can’t have a way that I manage; I have to have a way that I manage him, a way that I manage her, and another way that I manage the next person. It’s exhausting.” And it can be. There are some similarities that cross personalities, and leaders certainly have the right to lay down some ground rules,… Read More

A new take on engaging employees

Posted On May 6, 2014

Anytime you set about offering advice on a topic, someone will be out there offering opposing advice.  When you hire a contractor to work on your house – he invariably points out what the person before him should have done differently. So, it’s not surprising that there are some differing views on how to handle the needs of different generations of employees in the workplace.  My first book on managing across the generational divide is titled “Motivating the ‘What’s In It for Me?’ Workforce” and focuses on ways that business leaders can adjust to engage Gen X and Millennial employees…. Adultolescence and KGOY – what’s at risk?

Posted On April 24, 2014

I’ve talked here fairly frequently about the trend toward extended adolescence – younger generations holding off on typical adult milestones such as getting married, having children, and even moving out of their parents’ homes. There is a flip side to this, known as KGOY (kids getting older younger), where today’s children are entering into adolescence at younger and younger ages.  Nine-, ten- and eleven-year-old children are now “tweens” interested in and exhibiting more behaviors that are typically considered teenaged than child-like.  With the entrance and exit of adolescence being pushed earlier and alter, adolescence itself is getting stretched.  That is,… Read More

Game on: How one generation is changing the face of business

Posted On April 15, 2014

This is fascinating. We all know that technology has drastically impacted the daily workings of the business world. And we know the stereotype of today’s youth walking around with faces and fingers glued to some kind of mobile device or game system. Businesses are taking note. According to Gartner, by the end of this year (2014), a full 70 percent of Forbes global 2000 will be using some sort of gamification (an app or other software that uses game theory to influence behavior). This is up from only 20 percent in 2012 – a significant change in two short years…. Read More

Coworker preferences – where gender and generation collide

Posted On March 18, 2014

In December, the Pew Research Center released the results of a snap survey that asked whether individuals preferred to work with male or female co-workers. Whether politically correct or simply honest, the overwhelming majority (77%) expressed no preference. However, of those that did express a preference, males and females both stated a preference for working with males. But then they dug deeper and analyzed the responses by generation… Interestingly, the survey indicated that Millennials are “significantly less likely to prefer working with male coworkers than other generations.” And Millennial men are nearly twice as likely to prefer working with mostly… Read More

Learning the Ropes: Human Resource Management Basics for Beginners

Posted On February 12, 2014

You answer the phones, handle employee complaints, and do the payroll now, so why do you need an HR person? Aren’t they a major drag on the company? They only collect a paycheck but they never actually contribute anything measurable to the company, right? Not so fast. Human resources jobs are a lot harder than they sound. HR personnel aren’t necessarily a drain on the company. They do plenty to earn their keep. For starters, they handle the bulk of your company’s paperwork. Even if you have a mostly paperless company, they fill in with computer work that you either… Read More

Boomers joining Millennials for the city life

Posted On September 26, 2013

Here’s an interesting new trend – Baby Boomers are beginning to settle down in the big city.  According to a report in the Seattle Times, more and more Baby Boomers are walking away from the homes and yards in the suburbs to spend their empty-nester and retirement (or semi-retirement) years in the metro bustle that had once been the playground of the fresh-from-college crowd. It makes a lot of sense – smaller spaces, less time and money on maintenance, no worries about school districts – and it creates some interesting opportunities for employers and businesses.  Besides the overall real estate… Read More

Post-retirement Boomer careers – taking a tip from younger generations?

Posted On August 22, 2013

You can barely pick up the paper these days without hearing about the 10,000 Baby Boomers who are reaching retirement age every day and how they will a) be a drain on the social security system and b) not “go gently into that good night.” Yet whether it is for the flexibility to visit with grandchildren and pursue travel dreams, the need for added income, or simply the desire not to be seen as past their prime, more and more Boomers are taking post-retirement careers. Boomers that achieved executive status often return to the workforce as consultants – working flexible… Read More

Boomers bitten by the entrepreneurial bug

Posted On August 13, 2013

Whether it is due to fears about the economy, finally getting tired of the corporate grind, or simply a desire to stay busy in retirement, it seems more and more Baby Boomers are putting on the entrepreneur’s cap.  In fact, the Rapid City Journal recently profiled a Boomer entrepreneur whose bright idea for business is a support service company specifically for helping Boomer entrepreneurs get their businesses off the ground. Talk about niche. And yet he already has 50 businesses signed up. What does this trend mean to your business?  Are you losing experienced professionals because they are ready to… Read More
