Entitled generation? If so, millennials aren’t the first.

Posted On October 30, 2017

I have written many times in this space that millennials are not unique in being looked down upon as a generation by their elders. They’ve been labeled as entitled, lazy, self-absorbed. Their grandparents didn’t think much differently about their parents back in the day. Now bbc.com has been so kind as to substantiate this belief with proof – passages from newspapers, magazines and books of past generations filled with similar lamentations about the youth of their day. For instance: “Many were so pampered nowadays that they had forgotten there was such a thing as walking.” A Gen-Xer writing about millennials?… Read More

Entitled? Or bad timing? Or maybe a little of both?

Posted On July 21, 2016

Are millennials really the lazy, entitled brats they’re made out to be? Or is the millennial stereotype a media creation? Sarah Kendzior suggests in a recent article for Quartz that the image of millennials as spoiled narcissists is a media-generated “myth” that ignores the economic conditions under which the generation has grown. Far from expecting a plethora of options to cater to their whims, Kendzior argues millennials have suffered from a lack of options in the wake of the Great Recession, with lower incomes, less mobility and greater dependence on relatives than previous generations. Let’s say this out the outset:… Read More

Crowdsourcing? Yes, In Fact. For Me.

Posted On January 26, 2016

Again yesterday I had a request from an audience member for more information. More than a book, more than an article, she wanted to continue the dialogue I had started in my presentation. “Where can I keep up with this?” she asked. Another guy yesterday heard me last week on a radio broadcast in Buffalo and he, too, wanted more. For a while I’ve considered beginning an “online, on-demand, downloadable radio show” (aka: podcast) and I think it’s now time. I’m working on a business plan that addresses frequency, topics, budget, and a preliminary guest list of people I know… Read More

Are we creating the standard of a poor work ethic?

Posted On October 28, 2015

Last time, we looked at the millennial backlash toward the “entitled” stereotype. In a recent column for linkedin.com, bestselling author and sales leadership consultant Lisa Earle McLeod argues that perhaps it’s not the millennials who need to adjust, but the workplace itself. Writing with her millennial daughter, cum laude Boston University grad Elizabeth McLeod, she notes that one of the biggest disconnects for millennials in the workplace isn’t that they expect too much, but that employers expect too little. Written as an open letter to management from a resigning millennial, McLeod’s number one reason for that “resignation” was that low… Read More

“Thanks, Captain Obvious.”

Posted On October 7, 2015

Some of my favorite commercials are the Hotels.com ads with Captain Obvious. When the hotel guest locks himself out of his room while wearing nothing but his underwear, Captain Obvious says: “Most people wear pants.” A quick read of a recent MarketWatch article on the biggest financial mistakes typically made by Generation X and Generation Y might make even Captain Obvious himself say, ‘Well, duh.’ They aren’t saving. They don’t get professional help. They aren’t taking full advantage of employer 401(k) matches. They aren’t investing, and they aren’t saving outside their 401(k). You don’t say? A look inside some of these issues,… Read More

American Masters: The Boomers List – tune in Tuesday

Posted On September 22, 2014

A departure from my typical blogging, to encourage you to watch the premiere of the PBS documentary “American Masters: The Boomers List” tomorrow night (Sept. 23).  Or at least set your DVR.  The film showcases 19 iconic boomers – one born every year of the generation – and promises to provide an interesting perspective on one of the most talked about generations ever. Then again, getting the Baby Boomers to talk about themselves is never difficult. View the trailer here and check your local listings for times. Then come back here and tell me what you thought.
